Mkuru area and in general the Northern Mount Meru Ecosystem supports varieties of wildlife species.
Arusha NP hosts more than 45 species of reptiles and amphibians, about 500 bird species and more than 40 species of mammals. On the basis of very few studies and from local knowledge, the Mkuru area also used to have in the past a number of mammals such as Eland (Tragelaphus oryx), Bohor reedbuck (Redunca redunca), Steinbok (Rhaphicerus campestris), Greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), Lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis),Thomson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii), Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), Zebra (Equus burchelli) However wildlife species have decreased as a result of habitat loss, fragmentation and poaching, and some species are now locally extinct, such as Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) which disappeared in 1970. Nevertheless the area once again starts to host a number of endangered species, such as African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and leopard (Panthera pardus); also hunting dogs (Lycaon pictus) and lion (Panthera leo) can also be seen, very occasionally.
