Tanzania - Meet the people

The cultural safari is aimed at anyone interested in living a truly unique experience with the fascinating Maasai people, away from the hordes of tourists doing conventional safaris. Mkuru has a local group of camel owners and guides who have learned English to share their culture with visitors. You have the possibility to know Mzee Elias, the traditional healer of Mkuru, who attracts Maasai people from many neighbouring regions and will teach you which plants have healing properties and how they are used. Traditional medicine is still a core part of the country’s healthcare.

The Mkuru Maasai community is formed of 400 people living in 17 different BOMA (the typical residential complex) in their huts made by branch, mud and dung. Usually in every home there live one or more old men, their wives, children and grandchildren. In the centre of the BOMA there is the livestock, put it in a protected position.

The Maasai’s nutrition is rather poor and not diversified mainly due to the difficulty to preserve food for long time (when they have a meat’s meal the animal is killed and eaten in the same day). Eating is a very important moment in their social and cultural life and there are some celebration related to food as the “whole goat roasted over a fire”.
